Primary Schools

Longridge is an ideal location for primary schools pupils to supplement their learning in areas of their curriculum such as Geography, Science, and Physical Education, while the beauty of the site itself and the new experiences of the courses provide an ideal base for work in English writing.

Citizenship can gain practical application through a residential trip, which can be tailored to meet the needs of the young people. Our residential courses can develop confidence and responsibility, giving young people opportunities to work together on practical tasks, and exercise the important social skills of teamwork and leadership. The activities assist pupils to develop their physical skills, learn new ones, and support each other as they face new challenges.

Schools can use Longridge all the year round and in a number of ways. There are our day and overnight activity packages. We also offer preparation courses to give less experienced pupils the confidence and skills before a full-day or overnight stay. And we provide follow-up sessions to sustain the learning developed on the full-day and overnight residential courses.

Below is a selection of our courses. However, we recognise that each school has its own requirements for pupil activity. With this in mind, please remember that all of these can be adapted, and courses can be created to respond to the needs of your school and of your pupils’ learning. To discuss your requirements please telephone or e-mail our office.

Environmental Studies – October through to March, £2.00 per pupil for 2 hours.
Opportunities for learning include:

  • Weir trips: these offer an opportunity for pupils to see for themselves how a river changes. Our instructors are able to highlight the geographical features of a river course and the importance of locks and weirs. If weather permits, pupils have the opportunity to work a lock and see a weir in operation.
  • Field studies: we have nature trails, which include pond dipping and a chance to see rare flora and fauna. Above all, they offer the chance for young people to be outdoors and to be a part of nature.
  • Orienteering: map work is a vital part of a child’s learning and we offer a fun way of understanding maps, compasses and our geography, via a number of field and wood courses that suit a mix of abilities.

Preparing for an Overnight Trip – October through to March, £3.00 per pupil for a half-day including one or more activities. £5.00 for a full day of activities. Activities include:

  • Making a shelter. Depending on age, this can be as simple as putting up a tent or as complicated as making a bivouac out of nature’s materials.
  • Outdoor cooking – on an open fire or on a BBQ.
  • Campcraft – how to light and sustain a fire safely, using tools and equipment.
  • Preparing a campsite.
  • Water safety, including basic first aid, and keeping dry and keeping safe.
  • How to pack a bag and what you need to take with you and why.
