2012 Brochure & Christmas Opening

Posted: 14/12/2011 11:06:40 | News Home

Our 2012 brochure is now available from our website by clicking on this link.

If you would like a printed version, simply email me your address with a note of how many copies you would like and we will send them off to you as soon as they arrive back from the printers – probably early January.

As always, if you don’t see exactly what you are looking for in our brochure, give our Bookings Team a call as you may have an idea we’ve not thought of and together we can create something wonderful and new that suits your requirements

New Plans & Campaign for 2012

Our new plans include a ferry bridge to the island, creating an environmental garden, transforming the Wethered Hut into the Bed Shed and installing Winter Sports, such as ice skating, ice climbing and tobogganing to make our Winter season just as magical as our Summer season.

All of these things rely on funding being secured and I will of course send you an email letting you know when each of these projects has been completed.

Our main campaign for 2012 is Improving River Access, tidying up our existing paths, creating new ones and landscaping; all of which will allow our natural heritage to look its very best and more importantly allow access for all, including those who visit who have a disability.  Any help you can give realising this project – or any of our others – would be hugely appreciated.  Either money or time is gratefully received; we are particularly interested in securing the voluntary support from someone who could organise our events. We appreciate that few of us have much of either of these things to spare, so please spread the word of all that we do here, as the very best way to support the Longridge Charity is by using the centre and enjoying our adventurous activities.

Christmas Opening Times

We are all really looking forward to welcoming you back to Longridge in 2012.  If you haven’t already made your booking to visit us, our Bookings Office is open until the end of the 21st December and reopens on 4th January.  There will be a member of the team popping in the office most days between the 21st and 4th,  so if you have a booking enquiry then please email or leave a message and we will get back to you.

Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Do you think Longridge is GREAT

Posted: 28/11/2011 12:58:40 | News Home

The Great Exhibition 2012 would love to work with Longridge in helping to promote the fantastic facilities we have for water activities for people of all ages.  The aim of the Great Exhibition 2012 is to celebrate everything that is Great about Britain, and that the charity work that takes place at places like Longridge is very important.  We are up as a Great on the website, and we want to get as many votes as possible for being Great.  Here is the link for the profile which please forward to as many people as possible and of course register yourself and VOTE! http://www.thegreatexhibition2012.co.uk/greats/longridge

When votes reach 500 their CEO Julie Benson will come down the centre for half a day and volunteer. They will also make a film to show all hard work that the centre does which will be put on our profile to show people our experience of volunteering at the centre.  This will enhance our profile, show people what we do, encourage people to make donations to our charity and visit our website and most importantly the centre.

If you agree, please vote for us....

Not only was the accommodation earlier this year upgraded at Longridge but this week so was the quality of the mattresses!  Hypnos, the Bucks beds manufacturer, who supply beds to the queen and were recently reported by Guy Martin in the TV programme “The Boat That Guy Built “, to produce the most comfortable beds in the world, donated 6 of their mattresses to Longridge, to be used in their visitor accommodation.  Longridge has beds for 60, so not everybody will be lucky enough to luxuriate in Hypnos comfort but at £8 a night it is probably the most value luxury in the area!

The mattresses were delivered by Chairman of Hypnos, Mr Peter Keen, who was aided in the unloading by the Junior Girls Squad of Marlow Rowing Club, who were at the centre training.

Design a Party Invite

William Nugent Year 4

Sam Nugent Year 6

Two very talented brothers, Williams entries show huge potential for him in the future as a graphic artist, with amazing attention to balance and colour.  Sam's designs are more functional but no less beautiful and demonstrated that he had thought through what was needed on an invitation - so perhaps a future Saatchi and Saatchi type collaboration here?  We will be loading the invitations onto our website for everybody to use later this week.

Design our Flag

Festina Tusha, Abbie Wiliams & Beth Wilson

Wye Valley School - Form 8CA

&

Wye Valley School - Form 8SE

It proved impossible to choose between these two colourful interrpretations of the flag brief.  Therefore we are giving both ideas to our designer to create a hybrid design that will flutter on our new carpark flagpole - when the flagpole is erected Spring next year.

Well done and thank you to everybody that entered.

The judges where stunned by the calibre of entries for our Design a Flag and Design a Party Invitation competition. However, the judges have selected the following winners:

Littleton Guides & Senior Section are part of Shepperton District, 7 Members took part in a weir trip to raise funds for Longridge's new development.

1st Littleton Guides & now Senior Section (newly formed this year as are older girls didn't want to leave, largely due to their love of kayaking & Longridge summer camps in particular) have been coming to Longridge for the past 9 years (7 summer camps plus the last 2 weekends). 2 of the 5 Senior Section girls have now been on the last 5 Longridge summer camps & they all describe it as one of their favourite places on earth!

This year the Guides decided they would like to do something to raise money to sponsor some of the shingles for the new building, Their aim was to have as many shingles with their unit name on it as possible, to leave their mark on Longridge.

They decided having done a few weir trips that that would be a good idea for a sponsored event and the girls came up with the idea of shooting Marlow weir 10 times & paddling around the island each time to get back to the top. The idea being the bigger the challenge the more money they could raise.

Final figures aren't in yet but they estimate having raised between £900 & £1000 + the gift aid.

The trip was completed in 4 & a half hours, the distance paddled was approx 7.074 miles or 11.38 Km, with a total drop of 80foot.  Longridge's Activity Director Mark Campbell said " the Guides did an amazing job and as far as I know nobody has every done 10 consectutive weir trips round the island and Littleton Guides have created a record that we are looking forward to other groups trying to break!"

The girls are already planning  next years camp at Longridge, which will be the Group's centenary camp. Louise Hammett, the Group's Leader said "I'll be making an extra special cake for next year and I hope the leaders will be doing not only their FSRT next year but also their  Level 1 coach & the Guides are hoping to do either they're Paddle Power Discovery Or 2* & Paddle Power Passport for the new Guides and therefore 1st Littleton Guides & now 1st Littleton Senior Section new and old members will be visiting Longridge for Summer Camps for many years to come!"  This is great news for the centre as not only do we benefit from the Guides enthusiasm and great spirits but also the Longridge team get to enjoy Louises rather lovely cakes!
